Keeping your teeth and gums healthy

A staggering 95 per cent of us suffer from gum disease at some point in our lives but with good hygiene the risks can be easily controlled. Maintaining your dental wellbeing is vital and your hygiene examination forms an essential part of your healthy living regime.

If it isn’t treated, decay in teeth causes pain and discomfort and destroys their structure necessitating fillings and crowns to rebuild them. Gum disease destroys the structures that support our teeth so they eventually become loose and need to be removed. A simple homecare regime of brushing and flossing, good diet and regular dental health checks are all it takes to prevent most problems.

Regular visits are vital

The two main dental problems are caused by plaque and the efficient and regular removal of plaque is the most important factor in keeping our mouths healthy. Hygienists are specially trained to help you achieve a healthy mouth. Our dental hygienists will help you to look after your teeth and provide expert advice on maintaining a healthy smile. They may even recommend extra visits if you’re not making the progress we would hope. Hygiene therapy works well as part of our dental care plan, which means the cost of these appointments are already covered.

Why is dental hygiene important?

Maintaining your dental wellbeing is vital and your hygiene examination forms an essential part of your healthy living regime. It’s also important to emphasise that hygiene therapy may reduce the risk of developing several serious medical conditions, especially as research links gum disease to arthritis, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and problems with pregnancy such as premature births and low birth-weight babies.

What will happen at my appointment?

Your hygienist will remove any plaque, tartar and stains, before flossing and then polishing your teeth, leaving your mouth feeling clean and refreshed. They will also show you some hygiene techniques you can use at home that are extremely effective in maintaining a healthy mouth.

How much does hygiene treatment cost?

Treatment at the Lion Dental Centre costs from just £45 for a 20-minute appointment. Two hygiene appointments are also included within the cost of our monthly Care Plan.

  • “Joining the practice was the best decision myself and my wife made. Anthony is a very good person and is very professional at his work. The staff here are lovely people. On first attending my teeth were in a terrible state but after bridge work they are now first class. I highly recommend this practice to everyone.”
