Implant-Retained Dentures FAQ

You’ve no doubt heard about dental implants – an incredible treatment that can help transform your smile and restore your biting and chewing function. But what about implant-retained dentures? How do they differ and how are they the same? Are they the right choice for you?

In this post, we at Lion Dental give you all the information you need about this common treatment to make an informed choice about your dental care. We recognise that a trip to the dentist can seem scary or invasive, so we’re here to assure you of all the positives and benefits that go along with the procedures we carry out at our Stourbridge dental practice, helping you get the best out of your teeth – and smile.

What are implant-retained dentures?

Just like with single and multiple tooth implants, a small hole is made in the gum before a metal post is fitted in place. Then, the dentures are fitted to the posts.

Are they fixed?

In part – so no need for dental fixatives to keep them in place. However, as with all dentures, they can still be removed for cleaning and sleeping.

How do I know if I can have them?

It depends on the oral health of your gums, and whether there is enough jawbone for the implant-retained dentures to fix to – though grafts may be able to be done if not.

How do I care for my implant-retained dentures?

There are lots you can do:

– Remove & clean daily, as well as brush your gums, tongue and palate

– Ensure you have regular dental check-ups

– Keep an eye out for any changes and book in if you have problems

Is the procedure painful?

Some find that having tooth implants placed is much less painful than other surgeries such as tooth extraction. With implant-retained dentures, you’ll also have an anaesthetic during the procedure, which helps numb any pain or discomfort.
