What To Expect On Your Dental Implant Journey

A Man With Dental implants

Here in Stourbridge, our team of dentists helps patients just like you restore missing teeth – and restore their smile. Where once the only tooth replacement for lost teeth was dentures or apparatus like bridges, you can now implant a permanent false tooth in its place. We’ll share some more information about these dental implants in today’s blog post.

Why should I have my missing teeth replaced?

Tooth loss can affect our smiles; our diets; our confidence; and even the underlying gum and jawbone structures that keep our teeth in their positions. Our Stourbridge dentists would always advise replacing a missing tooth, as long as this did not have any negative implications on your smile. And if we are ever able to save a tooth from extraction – for example, if it is damaged – we will do so with the help of dental implants.

Why replace teeth with dental implants?

We often recommend dental implants to our patients because they are a permanent solution for tooth loss. This means they could last your entire life, providing you care for them properly. For this, you will need to commit to regular dental appointments and a good standard of oral care. Dental implants look like real teeth and are just as strong and durable, too.

What’s the first step for dental implant treatment?

Most treatments require a consultation ahead of the procedure, and tooth implants are no different. We want to make sure the treatment will be successful and create the results you want. And we want to help our Stourbridge patients restore a healthy, happy smile. A consultation can give us all the time and space we need to address concerns, answer questions and become comfortable with the treatment itself.

What happens during the tooth implant procedure?

Assuming the treatment is suitable for you, we will make a small incision in your gum, then a tiny hole, then effectively ‘screw’ the root part of the implant in place. Once the tooth implant has healed – usually a matter of weeks to months – a permanent crown can be fitted. In the meantime, we can offer a temporary crown to ensure you have the use of your new tooth.

Do tooth implants hurt?

Tooth implants are inserted under a local anaesthetic, so the treatment area should be numbed and prevent you from feeling pain. However, there is some healing involved and a little soreness in the area after placing your tooth implant isn’t unusual. Excessive pain and swelling could indicate infection, however – so we ask our patients to be vigilant.
